Gumede handed debut with Carr set to lead Vodacom Bulls in Cardiff tonight

Loose forward, Celimpilo ‘Mpilo’ Gumede has been handed his debut for the Vodacom Bulls this weekend when the Tshwane-based franchise visits Cardiff Rugby at Arms Park in Wales. Gumede – a former SA Schools and Junior Bok – will lace up his boots at eight, bringing his explosive game to the pack that is led by an unchanged front row, with Nizaam Carr captaining the side in their fourth round 2023/24 Vodacom United Rugby Championship outing.

Carr will start at blindside flank whilst Cyle Brink will be on the openside with the duo of Reinhardt Ludwig and Janko Swanepoel completing the second row as the lock pairing. Embrose Papier (scrumhalf) and Chris Smith (flyhalf) will direct traffic flow at halfback with an unchanged backline behind them. Sergeal Petersen who had an impressive debut will be at left wing whilst his energetic counterpart Sebastian de Klerk will be on the right of the park. David Kriel will be hoping to add more tries to his tally from inside centre with Stedman Gans on his outside with Devon Williams at fullback.

Director of Rugby, Jake White has gone with a 6-2 bench split which will see Johan Grobbelaar, Gerhard Steenekamp, Mornay Smith, Ruan Nortje, Elrigh Louw and Cameron Hanekom sit on standby for forward pack duty with Keagan Johannes and Johan Goosen the optional backline picks on the waiting list for duty.

This clash in the South of Wales is set for today, 10 November 2023, with kick off scheduled for 21h35 South African time and will be broadcast LIVE on SuperSport Rugby.

On the changes made to the matchday 23, White remarked: “I’ve got to try something different. We know Marcell (Coetzee) and Elrigh (Louw) play all the time and Cameron (Hanekom) we have seen. Elrigh has played every single game for eighty minutes, so the changes give us a chance to see some fresh legs. We signed Mpilo Gumede and Cyle (Brink) played a lot of rugby last year with this team last season and so did Nizaam (Carr) so we are trying new combinations but we do have Cameron and Elrigh on the bench so we could finish with those two as well,”

“To allow players to have rhythm, I’ll look to have some guys a couple of opportunities to get some minutes under their belts, learning the combinations and then look to change with some fresh legs. We are only in game four of the tournament, so we have some time to play around but this is a good position to be in where you can have three really good hookers to choose from or other combinations at the back.”

On Gumede making his debut: “I hope we get to see him as we did against Namibia. He was outstanding against them, and he looked like the real deal for me. He is a good athlete, he is big, and he is a great ball carrier with great feel,”

“I don’t think it is about he plays but how that combination looks. Him, Cyle and Nizaam are nice and balanced with skillset that complement one another,”

“Without putting pressure on him I just want him to do what he did on that game against Namibia. He had a great impact with great presence, and he offers a lot. Tall guy with presence at the back of the line out as well and as I said he has a bit of everything so he must just go out and enjoy the game on Friday.”

On the strong forward-packed impact squad, White remarked: “Look it is something that we have that allows us a different option of forwards and also it might be a game where it is on 4G and on a week three of a tour so it is a bit of a bit of gut feel that we try it and see how it works out for us,”

“Not forgetting that Keagan Johannes who plays at 9, has played 10 before as well and fullback, paired up with a guy like Johan Goosen who has also played centre, fullback and flyhalf so we are probably covered with two backs who can play most positions in the backline.”

Speaking about their opponents this week, the Vodacom Bulls mentor said: “They have a new coach with Dai Young having left but their new head coach has been with the club and knows the players. One thing we do know is that they play on a 4G pitch, and they caught us on the tempo of the game the last time we were here, and I must say that the opening 20 minutes was very quick so I am sure it will be the same this time around,”

“There could be an element of surprise in that there is a new group of players and new coaches but I do know Welsh rugby and the style of play so I do not think they will go too far away from what they know, and which has been part of their DNA for a long time.”

Asked about how conditions may impact the game, White commented: “The conditions do have an impact on the game. If we look at the opening game on tour, we thought we could play with the wind, and it didn’t work out quite well for us. In Parma, we played with the wind and that helped us a lot. We will have a look at what the weather is like when we are in the park and see how we use that to our advantage.”

VODACOM BULLS CONGRATULATE VERMEULEN ON STELLAR CAREER

Vodacom Bulls Director of Rugby, Jake White leads a chorus of praise across South Africa for Duane Vermeulen who has confirmed his retirement from rugby. Vermeulen has enjoyed an illustrious and exemplary career with honours that will glow for years to come.

Thor, as he is affectionately known by his peers and fans alike, has left an indelible mark in the hearts of all South Africans who will remember him as one of the greats of the game. His unrivalled success has seen him become a star whose name is engraved on honours boards at club and national level.

The 37-year-old represented the Vodacom Bulls with distinction in 23 matches across four campaigns – Super Rugby, Currie Cup, Super Rugby Unlocked and Rainbow Cup – between 2018 and 2022, winning the Currie Cup and Super Rugby Unlocked competitions.

White saluted Vermeulen and said: “On behalf of the Vodacom Bulls family I would like to congratulate Duane on what has been an exemplary career. He was an influential player during his time with us at Loftus, with an incredible work ethic and an ability to swing a game and turn it on its head in an instant,”

“He as an absolute workhorse with technical and tactical prowess that gave our forward pack/scrums the perfect foundation to attack set pieces with great confidence. As a coach, you take a lot of confidence from a player who you know can stand and deliver and he was able to do so time and time again for us. A great leader and an all-round good person for his colleagues to be around as well,”

“I know that wherever he has played, he has been well-received and respected, proving to be a great presence for fans, players and administrators alike,”

“What he has been able to achieve in his career is remarkable. He can be proud of both his achievements on the field and those he has inspired others to pursue off the field.”

BBCo Chief Executive, Edgar Rathbone added: “Duane was a great servant and ambassador of our franchise, inspiring the younger generation to fall in love with our beautiful game. We will always be grateful for the time he spent at Loftus and our memories are richer for having seen him run in the famous blue, helping us lift championships in the process,”

“We wish him all of the very in his retirement as he enjoys more time with his family and young kids.”

Petersen to debut for Vodacom Bulls in Parma

Creative backliner Sergeal Petersen has been handed his official club debut in round three of the 2023/24 Vodacom United Rugby Championship. The Grey High alumni got a pre-season run against Namibia’s Welwitschias and this weekend will start at wing when the Vodacom Bulls travel to Parma on Saturday 4 November.

Kick off in the North of Italy is set for 15h00pm.

Director of Rugby, Jake White said Petersen’s experience and versatility is an added advantage for the Tshwane outfit.

“We rate Sergeal highly, that is why we brought him into our setup. We know what he offers our squad, and he has a lot more experience that some of our outside backs. He has pace, he is really quick, and he can play at fullback, so I am quiet keen to see how he adapts playing with this back three. He understands fullback play as well so it will be good to have a wing that can play full back and that is something we look forward to having for the coming seasons.”

White has made a number of changes as he rotates his squad to manage player load. Wilco Louw is retained at front row and this week he will have Simphiwe Matanzima (loose-head) and Akker van der Merwe (hooker) serving alongside him at the front. Co-captain Ruan Nortje will pair up with Janko Swanepoel as this week’s lock combination at second row with Marcell Coetzee at blind-side, the ‘Sheriff’ Elrigh Louw at open-side flank and Cameron Hanekom at eight, completing the forwards pack in an unchanged back row.

Zak Burger starts at scrumhalf, combining with flyhalf Johan Goosen as the halfback duo to conduct traffic in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region.

Behind the Burger-Goosen partnership will be David Kriel at inside centre alongside Stedman Gans on his outside whilst Devon Williams is retained at fullback. On the wings will be Petersen and Sebastian de Klerk.

The run of new combinations this week sees Johan Grobbelaar slot into the impact squad alongside ‘the bulldog’ Dylan Smith who is set for his first run in blue this season. Mornay Smith, Reinhardt Ludwig, Nizaam Carr, Embrose Papier, Chris Smith and Wandisile Simelane complete the 5-3 split of fresh legs.

Asked about what his side expects at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi, White said: “We expect them to score a lot of points, they scored 36 in the opening match and scored 36 in their second too, so they score a lot of tries. We expect a tough game and for them to test our defence really hard,”

“They (Zebre) were in both their opening games till the death. This Zebre side came close against Ulster, and they were in it against Ospreys so we know they will be tough opponents for sure. They were a scrum away from the match against Ulster and they just just lost it against Ospreys, so there are no easy games,”

“Zebre with the make-up of their squad probably have the least number of internationals and that means they have the least amount of disruptions which makes them hard to come up against at the start of a season.”

Posed about how the team manages complacency and whether or not the changes are to manage that, White said: “We lost last week, so complacency is not a worry for us. We know that this is a tough competition and so we want to make sure we have depth in all roles, but complacency is not a concern for us,”

“it will be nice to see Simphiwe (Matanzima) start, it has been a while since he had a start, and he will be alongside Akker (van der Merwe) who is a Springbok and also Wilco (Louw) who is a Springbok. It will be good to see that combination work for us. We also have a new lock combination to try out and it will be nice to see how those 5-lock jumpers work together, so there is a lot of reason,”

“From a coaching point of view, we want to see whether or not we have created competition in each position because we need to play well all the time and we can’t rely on the same players all the time.”

1. Simphiwe Matanzima, 2. Akker van der Merwe, 3. Wilco Louw, 4. Janko Swanepoel, 5. Ruan Nortje (c), 6. Marcell Coetzee (c), 7. Elrigh Louw, 8. Cameron Hanekom, 9. Zak Burger, 10. Johan Goosen, 11. Sergeal Petersen, 12. David Kriel, 13. Stedman Gans, 14. Sebastian de Klerk, 15. Devon Williams

Three changes announced for Vodacom Bulls ahead of round two

The Vodacom Bulls have made two changes to the Match Day 23 ensemble that will do duty in round two of the 2023/24 Vodacom United Rugby Championship. The Tshwane outfit travel to Belfast to take on Ulster on Sunday 29 October, kick off is at 21h00.

Utility back Cornal Hendricks, speedster Stravino Jacobs and flyhalf Chris Smith come into the matchday 23 for Harold Vorster and Jaco van der Walt. Hendricks slots into the starting xv at inside centre whilst Chris Smith will get a run from the impact squad. The former lines up alongside David Kriel at outside centre with Jacobs and Sebastian de Klerk on the wings. Devon Williams will once again start at fullback.

The backline will be conducted by the halfback combination of Embrose Papier and Johan Goosen whilst the forward pack remains unchanged from the match against Scarlets.

Gerhard Steenekamp, Johan Grobbelaar and Wilco Louw line up in the front row with Ruan Vermaak and Ruan Nortje in the second, supported Marcell Coetzee, Elrigh Louw and last week’s player of the match, Cameron Hanekom in the third row.

Director of rugby, Jake White has opted for a 5-3 split which will see Akker van der Merwe, Simphiwe Matanzima, Mornay Smith, Reinhardt Ludwig, Nizaam Carr, Zak Burger, Chris Smith, and Stedman Gans will set a feature from the impact squad.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, White said: “It is early days but it is nice to have guys like (Cameron) Hanekom make their debut and really put in the kind of performances that he did, winning the man of the match. It is quite nice as a coach to know that there is still a couple of combinations that we can try. I thought Nizaam (Carr) was wonderful and he went into the open-side and did very well,”

“It is a 4G pitch, it will most likely rain and that presents a lot of challenges for us but we must learn from last year. Their set pieces are strong and they have great players in certain positions and we must make sure we match them in those positions.”

On the opposition, he said: “It is going to be a tough game, playing Ulster early up. They have a lot of passion and they are playing in their new field and I am sure they will want to impress on their first home game and they will be inspired because we had the same feel last week on our new turf,”

“From the start we had last week, we have to play well and build on.”
