Die week op Landbouweekliks | Die Potgieters boer met ‘mense, melk en makadamias’

Ons boer met mense, neute en beeste, sê die broers Johan en Herman Potgieter van Hoogekraal naby Hoekwil oor hul boerdery. Daar is ’n melkery, makadamia-afdeling en gasteplaas. Herman se aandag is hoofsaaklik op die finansiële aspekte van die boerdery, asook die grootmaak van die verse tot op KI-ouderdom, terwyl Johan hom weer op die makadamiabome toespits. Hoogekraal bestaan uit vyf aangrensende plase. Die Potgieters het hul eerste makadamias in 2017 geplant nadat brucellose in 2014 by van hul beeste gevind is. Hulle het besef die boerdery moet diversifiseer en het tans 53 ha makadamias. Johan se vrou, Linda, bestuur die Libertas Guest Farm waar besoekers in vyf huise op die werkende plaas kan tuisgaan. Daar is ook ’n kalfie-kleuterskool waar kinders die kalfies voer.
